Diaries, accompanied by pen sketches, kept by Charles Frederick Johnson during the Civil War as a member of Hawkins' Zouaves (later the Ninth New York Infantry), describing life in Camps Hatteras, Newport News, Reno, Riker, and Roanoke, and the battles of South Mountain and Antietam; diaries (1871-1886, 1895) and other papers with information about his life in Duluth (Minn.) and his activities as a member of the city council, city comptroller, customs collector, member of the Republican committee, and the Scandinavian Dramatic Society of Duluth; account books (1883-1892, 1895); bibliographies of his reading; plays and poetry written by him; a photograph album; a family bible in Swedish with family records; a translation in English of a letter (1859) describing the family's emigration from Sweden to the United States; and miscellaneous papers and sketches.
